Poster credits

This is at the bottom of our poster, we felt it was important to include this because it made it feel like a real film poster. Shannon did this part for the poster, she used photoshop to create this. She started off with a black background and then as a group we decided on the font of the text. It was important that it looked professional and appropriate for our film. We kept it simple because if it was complex it may have been harder to understand for the people reading it.

practise for exam

How have you improved your conventions of real media texts?

In AS I filmed the production using an iPhone and although we filmed a few versions of it we did not take as much care into making sure we had different camera shots or conventions to a horror film. Whereas for G324 we had a camera and made sure that each shot was filmed numerous times from different angles to guarantee that it would be to a high level. The beginning of our trailer shows this when we use a close up of the water streaming down with a leaf falling, this enabled us to give a soft and innocent feel to set the mood for the beginning. Which we then built up when we showed a two shot of our two main characters. Whereas in AS we began with the character Charlotte walking through the door, this doesn't enable the audience to connect with the character and feels rushed.

In AS although we had sound it could have been used more effectively. My skills have improved since AS because now I have learnt how to add non-diegetic sound to create tension. As a group we only added it in near the end. Whereas in A2 we added it throughout to make an obvious change in parts of the trailer such as the attempt at repair when we show the mid shot of the two characters run into the shelter, they believe they will be safe but the use of music showed the audience that they were leading themselves into trouble.

Another improvement I have made in A2 is the use of cropping on Adobe, we cut between the two characters running to the clown and then back again. There was an attempt of this in AS when we cut between the figure outside the window and then back to the character but it did not flow because we did not use a fade to black between it.

Ancillary Text Comparison

Although we had done research on other film posters we had not looked at the IT one as we wanted to steer clear of making it similar however afterwards we realised it was very similar. There are many features that are similar on the two posters. The first being that it is a dark background so that the character(s) stand out. Another is the use of the titles at the bottom, this is effective because it stands out against the black background but also gives important information.
Typically in an older film the use of red represents blood and this was used a lot which is most likely why it is used in IT because it is a new version of the TV series in 1990.
We wanted to keep away from this because otherwise it would be too stereotypical and our trailer already involves multiple stereotypes of a horror film.

Our poster conveys many features of real production posters. It includes the date of release at the bottom of the poster which many film posters do.

We also created a film magazine for our trailer.  We felt it was important to capture the clown on the front of the magazine because we looked at other magazine covers and they feature the main film of the week on the cover. Below is an example we found of this.
We made sure the clown stuck out by making the blue and red on him stand out as on other magazine covers they are bright. This is because it attracts customers to want to buy the product. We also made sure the magazine name stood out as this is common on many different magazines. I feel we met many of the stereotypes of a magazine cover but also made it our own by only featuring pictures of our film.

Use of Adobe

For our making of the trailer we used Adobe Premiere Elements 15 , this is a software that we have on the computers that enabled us to edit and form our trailer. From using this we were able to snip scenes in order to make them more effective an example of this would be when the two characters Sean and Shannon ran towards the abandoned shelter we cut their running to a scene of the clown and then back to them running which was effective because it created tension but also gave us the chance to show the audience what the characters would be facing next. We also used fast pace editing to create tension when they are running.

When filming we recorded multiple shots and then when we uploaded it to Adobe to bring these scenes together. A good example of this would be the beginning of our trailer when the river is seen and then it softly fades to the trees. This helped us to set the scene.
Adobe also enabled us to put music over the footage we filmed. We chose to start off with soft music and then when the tension builds make it darker and more scary.

By using Adobe we were also able to have text on the screen which created tension because it made the audience wonder what would happen next. This worked well because in trailers text is often used to make the audience feel part of the trailer. We also used a panning effect on Adobe which was effective in the scene of when the poster is up of the clown. We used panning multiple times to create a slow but tense feeling.

We zoom in on when I am reporting from air raid shelter because it shows the seriousness of the situation but also captures my feelings. This makes the audience sympathise with me because of the fact I am at the scene where attacks have recently taken place.
